History of CMEA/ACME Books
In the spring of 1973, the Canadian Music Educators’ Association featured its first research sessions at an annual conference in Ottawa and formed a Research Committee. That marked the growing recognition that there was a need in the music education profession to move from being simply practitioners to include research and research findings to inform practice. Research seminars, journals, and books followed. In 1986 the first issue of the Canadian Journal of Research in Music Education appeared and was distributed to all members of the CMEA. But, despite the best hopes of the university researchers, few practicing music teachers found the journal and its research contents accessible and relevant. In 2000, the CMEA decided on a bold move — to end publication of the journal and, building on CMEA books published between 1998 to 2002, to initiate a new publication series with the mandate of focusing on the connection between research and practice. The new biennial series, Research to Practice, also sets as its mission the creation of books on topics of practical relevance to music teachers internationally. Further, each book in the series will feature an international group of contributors.
