CMEA/Acme 2009 Performance Award Winners
Arts York Strings, Unionville High School The Arts York Strings is an ensemble made up of some of the finest young string players in York Region., music majors at Unionville High School in the intensive, region-wide Arts York program. In addition to regular school performances in the UHS Atrium and Markham Theatre, the ensemble is a perennial prize-winner at the Kiwanis and Music Alive Festivals. In recent years, they have been guest on programs by the Richmond Hill United Church Choir, Soundstreams Canada and the Toronto Mendelssohn Youth Choir.
Unionville High School Wind Ensemble The UHS Wind Ensemble is comprised of 65 students from grades 9 though 12 representing both our intensive Arts York Music program and the school’s thriving mainstream music program. Rehears once per week, the ensemble has prepared for performances throughout the year including appearances at the Ontario Band Association Concert Band Festival and the regional Music Alive receiving both festivals’ highest awards.
Nepean All-City Jazz Band The Nepean All-City Jazz Band has been a performance vehicle for young Ottawa-area jazz musicians since 1987. In 2009, the were featured at the Thousand Islands Jazz Festival in Brockville and the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. In 2007, they performed at Rideau Hall for the Governor-General’s Concert Series. Nepean All-City Band has also performed for conventions of the OMEA, CMEA and IAJE. NACJB has won Gold Awards at Musicfest Canada’s National Finals in each of the past 22 years. They have performed with jazz artists Christine Jensen, Guido Basso, Pat LaBarbera, Ian McDougall, Denny Christianson, John Nugent, Jeff Jarvis, Steve McDade, Bob Mintzer, Alex Dean, Chase Sanborn, Kelly Jefferson, Campbell Ryga, Alastair Kay, Mike Tomaro, and Randy Brecker.

Thames Scholars, University of Western Ontario Thames Scholars is an ensemble of 16 students from the Don Wright Faculty of Music, University of Western Ontario. Dedicated to exploring historically informed performance practice of vocal music from the 15th to the 19th centuries, this ensemble also performs more recently composed vocal music. Thames Scholars won an honorable mention in the 2002 CBC National Choral Competition’s hotly contested chamber choir category. The ensemble’s CD, Chiaroscuro: shades of love, life, and beyond, features a variety of repertoire from the Renaissance to the present. As part of the Early Music Studio at the University of Western Ontario, Thames Scholars often performs together with the EMS orchestra of period instruments.
